I came into existence in Muscatine, Iowa on the day of January 7, 1975. Muscatine is a Mississippi River town in Iowa where most of my family lives. My family own and operate a sewing, vacuum and fabric store called Neal's in the downtown of this quaint community. I attended McKinley Elementary School (grades K-2), Mulberry Elementary School (grades 3-5), West Middle School, and Muscatine High School. I graduated high school in 1993. In the fall of 1993 I moved to Iowa City to attend the University of Iowa where, in 1997, I received a BFA in painting. After college I spent two years working, pursuing a career in the arts and performing live music in various bands.
In 1999, I moved (with 4 members of the former band "L'og") to Oakland California. My move was encouraged by my acceptance into the graduate program at Mills College and a general interest in trying out life in a different state. I attended Mills College for two years in the middle of which, through a summer opportunity at City College of San Francisco, I discovered teaching. I graduated from Mills in 2001 with an MFA in Electronic Arts.
Realizing teaching was something that I enjoyed, I have made it my other (with art making) work. For two years I taught classes at the City College of San Francisco, Berkeley City College (formerly Vista College) in Berkeley, and California State University East Bay . My current teaching focus is at an amazing institution called Lick-Wilmerding High School in San Francisco. I teach some exciting Electronics, and Alternative Energy classes at this high school.
My current home is in San Francisco where I live with my wonderful wife Melissa Prest Kleindolph and our two cats Monkey and Enoki. I currently play in a band with 3 of the original members of L'og. The current band is called "Child's Wife." You can hear demo recordings in the "sound" section of this web site. My other passion is experiencing other cultures. I am involved in various cultural exchange projects which are outlined in the "Global Service Projects" section of this web site. My current project is a graphic novel about some of my travels to Africa. A preview is available.
