In an effort to help eliminate battery waste and the need to spend money on recharging devices like cell phones, I have been working on some designs for simple, efficient solar chargers. The goal is to make them as universal as possible, sturdy, and easy to repair. The prototype above has: an option for 5v or 12v charging, 4 superbright leds, a flashing charge indicator, a USB port, and a standard lighter port. The solar panel charges an internal NIMH battery pack which can be easily replaced. Once charged, the unit can be used to charge any cell phone or other portable electronic device.
